Changes I want at UOM!

You may disagree with some or all the points in this post. Instead of flaming me, I would rather have a decent discussion.
UOM also known as University of Mauritius, is the biggest Educational institution in Mauritius. It has an approximately of 8000 students.
Some changes that I would like at UOM/Things I dislike at UOM:
1) Ex Common Cafeteria
I don’t know how many of you eat there, but the quality of its food sucks big time. Once, a friend, who took a fried noodles, got a match(allumette) in his food.
And the quantity of food you get is less compared to the Cafeteria of UOM or MIE or MES and on most occasions, the food is cold. Least but not last, the Ex Common Cafeteria seems dirty( dirty floor). I wonder how can people go there to buy food.
2) UOM Cafeteria
Although the food is good(not great), on many times there isn’t many left. For example, on Fridays, I have badminton session from 12.00 to 15.00 and thus I miss lunch. It is quite normal for some one who did not eat for the last 4 hours to be hungry. And after 15.00 there are not many food left. The only food you get is oily food. (No fried rice,No noodles, No bread). It would had been better if they could extend the “lunch eating period”.
3) Sitting Areas on campus
There aren’t enough sitting places on the campus. We have a big raised plaza with almost no chairs and tables. I wonder why they let that be empty. Are they planning a football match there? We have approximately sitting areas for not even half of the UOM population. And after lectures, we are not allowed to stay in those lecture rooms. We could have chairs and tables in the raised Plaza and benches near the Faculty of Agriculture, benches at the ground floor of Engineering tower.
4) Revision Week/Late assignments
I don’t know why, but it seems that UOM or at least the lecturers ate the revision week. Next week, on the 30th November, I have Database System Exam(not test) and I have lectures till Friday(Normal classes). Where is our Revision week? And why are we always overloaded with assignments and presentation just before exams?
5) Administration
For once, stop sending us letters of Admission so late. For this academic year, the letters were already typed, printed and put in envelops by 30th July 2009. But the letters were posted 5 days latter and many of us received the letter on Friday afternoon and deadline was before noon on the coming Monday. As far as I know, banks do not work on Saturdays and Sundays. So please Administration people, post the letter earlier.
6) Lecture notes/Special lecturer
A particular lecturer does not like uploading notes on the CSE moodle. He asks students to register on a 3rd party website in order to have notes or relevant information. Not only that, now he tells you that you will do an online test on another website. (Both websites are none UOM official websites). He also encourages you to use your real name and use your student ID while registering on the website. Now, I have big issues about my privacy. I can’t go on and input my full name and my student ID on every websites. I don’t even use my real name on facebook or other social networking. Not only that, even my classmates do not know my real full name. Only a few, whom I trust, know my full name.

Some people has already guessed who he is. Not only he asks you to register on 3rd party websites but he also spams you about competitions; best love letter, best joke, ect.
No Sir, I have no intention of registering on your website. I care for my data privacy. I don’t want my name to be made famous on the internet world. And I have no intention of doing a test on a website where I don’t even know how you will correct it. Will there be total transparency? Won’t you award additional marks to a particular gender? Won’t you deduct marks for a Yes or No? Won’t you deduct my marks in particular after writing so much against you?
So many questions, no answers.
7) Test 4 days before final exams
Please lecturers. Avoid having test in the last week. I have a test on Thursday 26th November 2009. A test..And the coming Monday, I have final exams starting.
UPDATE:
Concerning the online test, I have some friends who did it. Some feedback which shows that the test is of pure shit and there’s no transparency.
- You can attempt the test more than once.(#fail) {Total number of times = 2}
- 1 hour to complete the test.
- In order to have all the questions right, work in groups.(A test for groupwork? #fail)
- There’s a question on loto which carries 40 points. (Gambling? #fail)

True. The Ex-common Cafe stinks!!! I feel like vomiting when I walk nearby it. I don’t care about the other cafe.. It’s kinda expensive(for the amount of food you get).
The Raised-Plaza is a real issue. I went there to revise last week.. There’s more than 70% of empty space. The Raised Plaza is a cool place to work in summer. So,i had to go to the library(where the ambient temperature is much higher) to study..
By the way, a library with an open space for people to talk? Are you kidding????
All of my neighbours on the table were gossiping.
And yeah, our revision week is gone **pooof** by magic, as always… each and every year.
And the test week… What a joke.. I still have tests, even now…

No sitting areas? hehe, the grass in front of the cafeteria is nice, I was there most of the time, playing cards n hanging out
But with the growing number of students, the area per head will be decreasing proportionally.
As for the revision week, I guess that they removed it koz probably they were already late in their schedule.
@SpecialLecturer : LOL! He should be reported for sending those joke mails. Perhaps he want to make you feel relaxed

But what is the use of having assignment, presentation, lectures till the very end. Exams are starting on Monday. And lectures are ending on Friday.

@Rikesh–>So, I have an online test maths..*to be done in some blah blah website*..Wednesday, I have a presentation.. Monday, I have exam.I have 6 or 7 papers in 13 days..(including Saturdays and Sundays).And without forgetting to mention, I have unable to attend Uni due to my back pain. Concerning the test week, perhaps a new magician known as UOM is ruling over the Magic World..Concerning the effort, I’m just being lazy on the other days. But hey, life is too precious to be lazy.

I have test on friday 27th of November.
For proposition 5, you could have added the possibility of paying the fees online, by e-banking. So you can pay at home, even in a week-end.
Can you pay UoM by bank draft?

AhA! J’aime bien quand tu critique UoM… Of course, constructive criticism…
Let me start by the end of the post: I happened to have a presentation + 2 reports to submit on the last day of the first semester… Of course, exams were in the next week.
One thing you forgot to mention, may be that’ll come during the second semester. Specially, with the CSE department… They initially plan test week around week 7-8..but out of bad time management, they are late with their syllabus… test week happens to be week 12-13. Plus during week 14 you those damn reports to sumbit for those assignments while the presentation is due for week 15. And taddddaaaa exams week 16. And how could you expect the student to excel in the exams? To note that there is a “selfish” feeling on the part of lecturers, they do no freaking care if you have assignments/projects for other modules.
Special lecturer aka galant 4 coco… his site needs to be banned! Almost every student who has known this lecturer got an idea of his “glue beating” attitude especially with a “particular gender” as you rightly mentioned… Come on, man! That’s utterly disgusting. Students will never respect such a lecturer!
Moving on to Administration… well, they are always late in posting the letters.
Sitting areas on campus… the biggest issue… l’année aller, l’année vini, lekip gagnant de SU dir nu pu met bancs lor campus… kot bane bancs la mo camouade?? Have not been to UoM for almost 6 months…
UoM cafe… I prefer MIE
More quality food for same amount of money

@ Rikesh: Library.. you need to be on first floor… where there are the law books… it’s peaceful there… not the open space with lots of tables and chairs…. When on second floor… you get to hear the noise from the third floor…

Point 6 is funny. I know who is that guy..i mean lecturer. Well work your best in test…and if something is not clear when marks your paper…then SHOW him! Show him…what a blogger can do! But be sure you work your best for the module he does with you. This way you’ll have a strong point to FRAK him in case he mess with your marks!
@Bruno–>Yes, by bank draft. It beats the whole purpose of sending letters so late. Imagine if some one received his letter after the closing time of banks. how will he do the draft?
@Jens—>More tables than chairs in common…Well well..I stopped going to common. Last year, I was there everyday. This year, perhaps once per 2 weeks. No places for students.

@Rikesh–>damn.You beat me by one day. But I have presentation on Wednesday late afternoon, test on early Thursday. I wonder how I will reach UOM before 08.30.
@Ruby—>My modules are semester wise. The newly implemented system. We need to do something about the Ex common cafeteria. I will try to talk with those from the Student Union. It will be nice to see if they do something or not. In case they don’t. I will surely remember for next year’s election.

@Rikesh—>Of course. You just need my login and password..You see, online test are so secure. I made screenshot of the test at every steps. And I will be writing a post about it tonight. Since the test closes today!
