Nokia E51

I finally got my E51 mobile. The first impression I had while using this phone, the phone seems to be stronger than the other mobiles I used in the past and lighter than several other mobiles. Despite the keys being quite close, there is enough space not to press 2 keys at any time.

The phone has 22 keys and 4 directional keys.  Additional keys that I did not have on my previous mobile was the home, Email, contacts and calender keys which has  3 functions each.

Home Key:

Short press: Open the Menu

2nd short press: Access the main view(Active standby)

Long press: View the list of active applications.

Contact Key:

Short press: Open the Contacts application

2nd short press: Return to the previous application

Long press: Create a contact

E-mail key:

Short press: Open your default mailbox

2nd short press: Return to the previous application

Long press: Create an e-mail message

Calender key:

Short press: Open the Calender application

2nd short press: Return to the previous application

Long press: Create a meeting entry

The camera is found on the back of the mobile. Despite being a 2MP camera, the quality of the pictures are not that great. But hey, I’m not complaining.

Another drawback of E51, is the battery life. According to reviews, the battery does not stand more than 2 days on heavy usage.  The battery lasted nearly 48 hours. Heavy use of internet radio and Wlan.

Some of the advantages of having this phone are that:

  • Quad-band GSM/3G (with HSDPA 3.6 Mbps), EDGE and GPRS support
  • Wi-Fi, VoIP over WLAN
  • Symbian 9.2 OS Series 60 3rd edition UI with Feature Pack 1
  • 12 mm slim, elegant design
  • 130 MB onboard memory, expandable via microSD cards (up to 8 GB), hot swap
  • Very comfortable keyboard and D-pad
  • Bluetooth v2.0 with A2DP and IrDA (115 kbps)
  • New Symbian key icons
  • Fast user interface

Configuring the Wlan is a pain in the ass if you don’t know how to overcome the “bug” in the phone.

You need to manually enter the IPv4 settings in order to use the phone on several routers, including Orange livebox.

You need to give the phone an IP address.(Give it the same IP address as the default gateway, only change the last digit to something between 2 and 9), enter the subnet mask, default gateway, and the dns address.

Let the IPv6 settings to automatic.

Settings that I used:

  • Phone IP address: 192.168.1.5
  • Subnet mask: 255.255.225.0
  • Default gateway: 192.168.1.1
  • DNS address: Primary :192.168.1.1(Use the same DNS address as your router/livebox) Secondary : 0.0.0.0

Also, make sure to rename your Orange livebox to something more easy like I renamed mine to Tushal from livebox-395. Also, rename all your access points to like; Home, University, ect..And delete any duplicates access points.

I used both Orange and Emtel on the phone. With the Emtel sim, I connects to the internet in 3G mode only whereas the Orange sim connects through 3.5G when there is a strong network signal and EGPRS when there is not enough network strength.

Today, I will try to install Windows Live messenger, Skype and Python on the phone. And the side note, despite the official website lists that the mobile supports up to 8Gb, there are users who tried to use 16Gb and 32gb and had no difficulties. The only trick is to update the firmware version. And the reason why I bought this phone; I wanted a phone which has Wifi support, 3g and not that expensive.

Important Update: E51 users who are having

difficulties to use the Wlan feature, you can

install the Wefi application. It works perfectly

fine. I have just tested it with different hot

spots and it connects automatically to them.

No need to manually enter ip, ect.

Wefi application can be find <here>

  1. Congrats on ur new phone man!
But you keep your phone in 3G/3.5G mode at all times by simply going into settings–>phone–>network–>network mode–> and put to UMTS
it wont have any effects on battery life since mauritius has a gud 3G coverage.

Also, install jbakstaskman, opera mini and gravity. They are the most important…

  2. Thanks..The phone stays on 3G itself..I don’t get 3.5G everywhere..Only at some places..i wonder why..
    jbakstaskman—>???
opera mini–>i have not yet installed that
    gravity—???

I’m using my Orange sim in the phone..since the emtel one…well well.not many knows that number..

Recently I wanted to change my N73 for a newer model but finally, I will keep my money to buy a nice camera :)

  13. Install the application named “Wefi”..it helps you connect automatically to wireless networks..You don’t have to enter anything with that program. In case you can’t find it, let me know. I will post the link.

  14. A very nice Topic. Thanks alot hope you go for the detail next time!

  15. please help me activate wlan on nokia e51…i use emtel…mari bez sa,internet working but cant get the wlan/wep

  16. The Wlan does not work great in the 300 version.
    You have 2 solutions
    1) Update the firmware to 400.
    2) Install handywifi or wefi.
Wefi is better. It automatically looks for hotspots and connect your mobile..

The Wlan in verison 300 has a problem of not auto assigning ip, dns, gateway.
If you need further help, you can email me on tushal2@hotmail.com or add me on msn.
